Gum disease on the rise.

Updated: Aug 23, 2023

Why gum disease is on the rise?

Periodontal (gum) disease is an infection of the tissues that hold your teeth in place. It's typically caused by poor brushing and flossing habits that allow plaque—a sticky film of bacteria—to build up on the teeth and harden.

1. Poor oral hygiene: Inadequate brushing and flossing can lead to the buildup of plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that can irritate and infect the gums, causing gum disease. If people are not maintaining proper oral hygiene practices, the risk of gum disease can increase.

2. Unhealthy lifestyle choices: Certain lifestyle choices, such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, a poor diet high in sugar and processed foods, and lack of exercise, can contribute to gum disease. These factors may be more prevalent in certain populations, leading to an increased risk of gum disease.

3. Stress: Stress can weaken the immune system and make individuals more susceptible to infections, including gum disease. If people are experiencing increased stress levels, it could potentially contribute to a rise in gum disease cases.

4. Lack of access to dental care: Limited access to dental care, whether due to financial constraints, inadequate healthcare infrastructure, or other barriers, can prevent individuals from receiving preventive dental services and treatment. This can result in the progression of gum disease and an overall increase in its prevalence.

5. Hormonal changes: Hormonal changes during pregnancy or menopause can make gums more sensitive and prone to gum disease. If there is an increase in the number of women experiencing hormonal changes, it could contribute to a rise in gum disease cases.

It's important to note that the reasons for an increase in gum disease can vary depending on various factors such as geography, socioeconomic conditions, and overall oral health awareness within a population. If you're concerned about gum disease, it's best to consult with a dental professional who can provide you with the most accurate and up-to-date information.
