Root Canals

Learn About Root Canals and Why They're Necessary

Instead of removing a tooth where the roots have become inflamed or infected, a dentist will perform a root canal. During this procedure, the inside of the tooth gets cleaned and disinfected. The length of time a root canal takes depends on where the affected tooth is located. If a root canal is being performed on a front tooth, it may take an hour. When root canals are performed on the back teeth, it can take up to 90 minutes. In some instances, root canals may require two separate appointments.

While root canals are often thought of as a painful procedure, the pain is not excessive. In fact, it is much more painful to have an infected tooth. Root canals are often the only way to save a tooth that is at risk of being lost because of decay or infection. The tooth is able to stay intact without losing function.
